Shopping List
Shirts – Powder blue with navy trim is the minimum starter shirt, other colors and styles are optional. Crews discuss prior to games to match colors / styles when working together.
Pants – Heather gray pants are the minimum starter pants. Charcoal pants are becoming acceptable in many organizations and leagues and is trending to become the norm.
Hats – For our association, the Lone Star navy cap is the official cap. Other organizations have their own branded cap (USA Softball, TASO softball, USSSA softball). 4 seam hats are typical for plate umpire, 6 and 8 seam for base umpire. It is possible to use 6 seam as dual purpose if it fits properly.
Belt – Simple black belt is the minimum
Shoes – Solid black . It is encouraged to have a set of plate shoes and a set of base shoes.
Socks – Black socks, calf or knee length
Undershirt – White undershirt
Jacket – Optional purchase, Navy with powder blue ½ zip jacket is starter jacket
Gear:
Umpire Indicator for tracking balls, strikes, and outs
Umpire brush for cleaning the plate and pitching rubber
Umpire game card holder, for holding scorecards and lineup cards
Pen / Pencil for annotating
Ball bag – Navy cloth bag for plate umpire to hold balls and tools (1 is minimum)
Leg guards – Plate umpire leg guards to protect shins
Chest protector – Plate umpire chest protector to protect the chest and shoulders
Mask – Plate umpire mask to protect the face and neck
Groin protector – Athletic cup to protect the groin
